Introducing new Mitchelton-BikeExchange signings Drew Morey and Kaden GrovesFri 20 Jul 2018
After a successful ten days of racing at the Giro d’Italia U23, preparations for the second half of the season are already well underway for Mitchelton-BikeExchange with two new Australian signings to introduce, climber Drew Morey and former U19 national road champion Kaden Groves.
Exciting prospects for the future, both Morey and 19-year-old Groves come into the team with specific targets for the Asian races that will take us through the deep part of the season into the last races in December.
They will bolster the squad in key areas, with 21-year-old Morey going straight into last month’s Baby Giro for his first taste of European racing successfully in support of Robert Stannard.
The Chinese UCI Continental team head to China this week for the Tour of Qinghai Lake with Morey and Groves both set to take to the start line alongside Briton Jacob Hennessy, Australian Harry Sweeny and Chinese riders Bi Wenhui andSun Xiaolong.
“I'm very excited to be a part of such a well-managed development team like Mitchelton-BikeExchange and I am looking forward to all the opportunities that are available throughout the rest of the year.”
“I live in Melbourne and previously I rode for the Terengganu Cycling Team where I was a climber and a general classification rider.
“My best moment so far, would be my stage win in the Tour of Flores. It wasn't the biggest race, but it was my first race with my team last year, so it was awesome to get off to such a good start.
“I want to get the most out of myself and see how far I can go. Off the bike I’m interested in good food and coffee, which are easy to find in Melbourne and also other sports such as Australian Football League and cricket.”
“I am excited to be a part of such a high-profile team and I cannot wait to start racing in the Michelton-BikeExchange colours.”
“I grew up in Gympie, Queensland, however am currently living on the Sunshine Coast. I would consider myself a sprinter, but I also back myself on the climbs.
“My best result to date is a stage win at the Tour of Fuzhou last November. My end goal in cycling is to become a professional and when I’m not riding I spend my time at the beach or bakery.”
Sport director James Victor:
“Kaden is a former junior national champion and is a very exciting prospect given his age. He is considered a sprinter, but his climbing skills are very impressive. Ahead of Qinghai Lake the team spent some time at altitude in Italy and Kaden clocked the second fastest time out of the group up the mighty Stelvio.”
“He has been working well with Jacob in training and gives us another option for fast finishes, with Qinghai Lake providing a great opportunity for him to do well with maybe six or seven chances for Kaden or Jacob to contest the sprint stages.
“Drew is a climber and a good time triallist and he gives us another option to race for the general classification, he came straight into the Giro d’Italia U23 having never raced in Europe before and performed very well, especially in the mountains.
“Both Drew and Kaden have fitted in nicely with the group so far and it’s possible that Drew could target the top ten overall in Qinghai and it will be important for both riders to make the most of their opportunities.
“Their experience of racing in Asia is going to be important for the team and a big part of bringing them on board mid-way through the season was to target the Chinese races that run across the next few months into the autumn and winter.”
