Jenner and Groves storm to second and third in the prologue at Tour of China II

Mon 17 Sep 2018

Mitchelton-BikeExchange picked up where they left off in China with Australians Sam Jenner and Kaden Groves taking second and third in the prologue at the Tour of China part two.

A short, ‘hot-dog’ of a course was predominantly flat, just under seven kilometres and ideal for a single power effort that suited both Groves and Jenner with Zhi Hui Jiang following Chinese road champion Niu Yiku into the white best Asian rider’s jersey.

The wet conditions weren’t ideal, but the course wasn’t too technical, out and back with one turn and over within minutes. Anthony Gioacoppo (Bennelong-SwissWellness) won the stage, only five seconds quicker than Jenner and eight over Groves.

Zhi Hui Jiang was the fastest Asian rider on the day, coming home 19seconds down on Giacoppo in 16th place.

Sport director James Victor:

“It’s a really positive start by the guys. We haven’t even sat down to go through our tactics for the rest of the week yet, it was about focusing in today’s seven-kilometre effort.”

“There aren’t many climbs on the parcours this week and there’s a lot of sprinters here looking for results and that’s why we have Kaden to keep us in contention and it’s great to see him make a strong start today along with Sam and Zhi Hui Jiang.

“The important stage will be the individual time trial on stage four, that for me is the Queen Stage. It’s at altitude, 1,300metres and we won’t have a great idea of the course until we actually see it, but that day is key.

“We need to play it cool and stick to the task in hand. The boys made great progress in part one last week and the group has really come together, with three fresh guys coming in and three direct from racing here last week we also have good balance and we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s first road stage.”
