July recap & reactionsThu 13 Dec 2018
The month of July was a month of domination for the women’s team with their incredible performances at the 10-day Giro-Rosa.
The team delivered even more than expected at a race that was their main goal of the season claiming six of the 10 stage wins on offer, the overall race victory, third place plus the points and sprint jerseys.
The outfit showed their diverse skill set by winning sprint stages, mountains stages and an uphill time trial stage, and for that the month of July will clearly be remember for the Giro-Rosa.
To add to this, the icing on the cake was of course Annemiek van Vleuten’s fantastic late victory at La Course by le Tour de France, before Rob Power took his first win for the team at Prueba Villafranca-Ordiziako Klasika with Simon Yates in second place.
Here’s our winning riders reactions:
Jolien D'hoore - Giro-Rosa stage 3 winner
"I came into the last corner in around fifth position, so I actually had to go from that position otherwise it was too late. It was a really long sprint but I managed to hold it until the finish line.
"It was great today that we could also keep our GC riders safe and up there and then of course I am happy to win and it is good for the morale for the team.
"I just had to believe in myself and just had to say myself that I could do it and that is what I did. Sometimes it is that simple, it is all in the head.
Stage 4 - "The last corner I got a bit boxed in and had to come from the back again, so I did a sprint before my actual sprint and I didn't feel fresh anymore when I started my real sprint but it was enough to win it.
Amanda Spratt - Giro-Rosa - Stage 6
“It is a little bit surreal to be in the pink jersey, we wanted to see today if we had an opportunity to take time. It worked out well, there were quite a few attacks and it was hard and Annemiek really set me up for the attack when I went and it worked out perfectly.
“We actually came and rode this climb a couple of weeks ago and I think that really paid off. We knew when was good to attack, we knew it would get steeper and we just had to stay patient until then. I went into the big ring because I knew it flatten off after and I am so happy to take the jersey."
Annemiek van Vleuten - 3x stage winner and 2018 Giro-Rosa winner
“This is a dream come true, not only for me, but for the whole team. We prepared so well for this race and to win six stages, the overall and three jerseys and do it in this way racing with confidence and control it’s a super story for the team.
“Especially because before I thought that I would never win the Giro-Rosa. My first one was in 2010 and I always thought that I am not a climber, so it won’t happen, but yesterday to win on the Zoncolan and then today to win the GC, it’s very special.
“Today’s stage win wasn’t premeditated, it just happened out there on the road, I felt that it was good to attack on the climb and carry some speed into the descent. It’s no secret that attack is the best form of defence and that was me defending the jersey. I felt good on the climb and it’s special to wrap up the GC by winning the last stage.”
Annemiek van Vleuten - La Course by le Tour de France winner
“It was unbelievable. With 300metres to go I still thought I would get second and then I saw her dying. To win like this...it was a tough ride, but beautiful."
“The gap going into the descent was really small and Anna is also a really good descender, but I always keep believing and keep on thinking that anything is possible and never give up. That was really important today.
“This win is really beautiful, the second time at La Course and especially coming only two days after winning the Giro Rosa, but to win this race in this way is really special and high up on my list of memorable wins.”
Rob Power - Prueba Villafranca-Ordiziako Klasika winner
“It’s been a long road, but it was pretty exciting getting my first win today and to achieve it in that way was pretty special. It was a true team effort and we rode aggressively all day in what was a hard race over circuits that were really tough.
“Yatesy told me to go for it on the last climb if I was feeling good and when he made it over to me we went over the top together and that was a really special feeling. Taking that into the finish with Yatesy was great and I’m just happy that the team have got such faith in me.”
