Kennedy the highest finisher for MTS at the Giro dell'Emilia

Sat 5 Oct 2019

The women’s edition of the Giro dell'Emilia saw Clasica San Sebastian winner Lucy Kennedy finish in 18th place for Mitchelton-SCOTT up the San Luca climb.

A large bunch arrived all together at the base final and decisive acsent to the finish line, ready to battle out for the race victory, with Demi Vollering (Parkhotel-Valkenburg) proving to have the best legs on the day to claim the win.

Amanda Spratt unfortunately found herself out of contention after suffering an untimely mechanical problem on the run into the base of the climb and then it was all up to Kennedy to try and deliver a result, but after a fairly steady and flat race before the climb, there were too many fresh legs battling it out for the victory.

A long flat start

The race began with a pan-flat opening 90kilometres but with the absence of any wind, it appeared that the peloton were happy for a steady day and waited for the final, a hard fight up the San Luca climb.

Silvia Valsecci (Bizkai-Durango) was the only rider to escape during the race and opened up a 45seconds advantage. Teams worked to slowly draw back the solo leader and eventually made the catch with around 30kilometres to go.

Splits before the final

A crash with five-kilometres to go caused chaos in the bunch with splits occurring and momentum lost. Straight after, there was a mechanical problem for Spratt just before the road began to head north. Kennedy tried to fight up the climb but it wasn't to be for Mitchelton-SCOTT with Vollering coming out on top and Kennedy just missing the top ten.

Lucy Kennedy

“I think everybody was just thinking resigned to the fact that it was just going to be all into that final climb, it was dead flat and not much wind to speak of with just a couple of kick-ups but nothing major.

“I prefer hill top finishes once the race has been hard, when you’ve got 100-odd riders coming into the one feature of the course, it is hectic.

“The team did an awesome job leading into the climb. I was actually ok where I came into the climb, I could have been a little further up but there was just nothing in the legs to go with the move. I think this late in the season you either have it or you don’t and I didn’t today.”

Alejandro Gonzales - Sport Director

"In the end Lucy just didn’t have the legs to go on the final climb and then Spratty mechanical, so it was also not her day. Tomorrow is another race."
