Meyer inching closer with third on stage four ITTFri 15 Sep 2017
Grand Tour stage winner Cameron Meyer showed his time trial pedigree on stage four of the Tour of China by taking third place in the individual event to continue his progressive rise up the general classification.
A flat 3.3kilometres course suited the characteristics of former Track champion Meyer with a couple of technical corners combined with long straights making for a fast course despite the light rainfall.
Mitchelton-SCOTT finished with two riders in the top 25 on the stage with Harry Sweeny producing a strong performance to place 24th and the team ranked as the second best on the day.
The stage was won by Joseph Cooper (IsoWhey-Sports) with Meyer’s third place now moving him up to seventh overall, 33seconds down on race leader Liam Bertazzo (Willier-Triestina).
“We were really consistent throughout the team today,” said sport director Dave Sanders. “To come away with second in the team classification for the stage and an individual third place is really satisfying. Cameron produced a strong ride and was very close to the win today, only four seconds down on Cooper.”
“There were a few technical aspects to the course and at times it was patchy due to the rain, but all the guys rode hard and came through without any problems.
“We’ve seen some quite negative racing over the last few stages and unfortunately it has restricted our opportunities to try and shake things up and create attacks.
“Despite that we are in a good position ahead of Sunday’s stage and we will be looking to get amongst the time bonuses and try to move up on the general classification.”
The fifth and final stage of part one of the Tour of China takes place on Sunday with a short and fast 128kilometre stage around Anshun that is expected to suit the sprinters as it includes only one, fourth category climb ahead of the finish.
