Nieve 14th as Meyer just slips out of the top ten on the Queen stage of the Tour of BritainFri 7 Sep 2018
Today's Queen stage at the OVO Energy Tour of Britain saw another change up to the overall standings with Cameron Meyer just slipping out of the top ten overall after a steep hill-top finish, where Mikel Nieve was Mitchelton-SCOTT's highest finisher in 14th place.
It was Wout Poels (Team Sky) who sprinted to the stage victory after following a move by Julian Alaphilppe (Quickstep-Floors) who now moves into the race lead.
Quadruple break free
At the start of the stage, four riders broke away and opened up a one minute gap after just 20km of racing.
The hilly stage saw the peloton work to keep the leaders within a reachable distance as they continue to hover around two minutes in front as the headed over the categorised climbs.
Final climb showdown
LottoNL-Jumbo and Quickstep-Floors did a lot of riding to control the distance and slowly worked to reel back in the leaders, doing so, just three kilometres from the finish as the road began to head up.
Immediately the fireworks began on Whinlatter pass with Julian Alaphilippe (Quickstep-Floors) the first to attack but with race leader Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) on his his wheel.
This caused huge splits within the peloton, until eventually three riders, Poels, Alaphilippe and Hugh Carthy (EF-Drapac) opened up a gap and contested the stage win.
Meyer battled hard to minimise his losses behind, crossing the line in the first chase group to finish the stage in 28th place to now sit 11th place overall with two-days remaining.
"It was a fast stage all day, up and down, plus wind and rain. There were some strong riders in the breakaway so the teams rode a solid pace to keep it under control.
"I didn’t have the best legs today so I struggled to stay in contact up the final climb and unfortunately could not keep my position in the top ten.
"We have two sprint stages still to come and the team has got through the tour well to this point so we will look for another result over the coming days with Caleb (Ewan)."
