Michael Albasini and Daryl Impey Will Lead ORICA-GreenEDGE in GippingenWed 5 Jun 2013
Two days before the Tour de Suisse begins, the final preparatory tour before the Tour de France, ORICA-GreenEDGE will line up in Gippingen, Switzerland for the GP du canton d’Argovie. Starting and finishing in Gippingen, the 181.5 kilometre race is laid out very much like a World Championship course with its lumpy 12.1 kilometre circuits.
“A challenging course like this will be a nice way for our guys to kick start their engines before Suisse starts,” said Sport Director Vittorio Algeri.
Last year, only half the field saw the finish line, mostly due to lost ambitions of winning the one day race.
“A lot of riders are in it for the win and will pull the plug once the win is out of reach,” added Algeri. “They choose to rest up for Suisse rather then continue when they’re out of contention.”
With that approach in mind, ORICA-GreenEDGE will keep several Tour du Suisse riders at home to focus on final preparations for the Tour de France.
“We’ll have a slightly different squad for Gippingen than we will for Suisse,” explained Algeri. “Gossy [Matt Goss], Cam [Cameron Meyer] and Aidis [Kruopis] will stay at home. They’re focused on Suisse and don’t need to do this type of race.”
One rider who is focused on a win in Gippingen is 2011 winner and hometown rider Michael Albasini.
“We’re going in with a motivated hometown boy in Albasini,” said Algeri. “[Daryl] Impey is also on-form. Albasini was fourth here last year and won the previous year. Either of he or Daryl could do something big in this type of race.”
