Mitchelton-SCOTT confirm Sun Xiaolong as stagiaire for ColoradoMon 13 Aug 2018
Chinese all-rounder Sun Xiaolong has been offered the opportunity to race as a trainee with UCI WorldTour team Mitchelton-SCOTT at the upcoming Colorado Classic.
Joining Chinese registered UCI Continental team Mitchelton-BikeExchange in 2017, 24-year-old Sun started this season with some impressive performances at the Dubai Tour in February and experienced his first taste of European racing at GP Criquielion in Belgium and Trophee Paris-Arras in France in late spring.
A talented rider in the classics mold who can climb, sprint and animate in the breakaway, Sun has experience in both mountain bike and road competition in Asia and recently rode in support of stage winner Kaden Groves at the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China.
“I was very excited and actually quite surprised when I heard the news that I could have the opportunity to race for Mitchelton-SCOTT team in the Colorado Classic. It’s always been a big dream for me to ride for a World Tour team since I started to do professional road races.”
“Since I started my cycling career as a mountain bike rider in the provincial team in China, it seemed to be a far dream for me. I’m very grateful for the support and help I receive from the GreenEDGE set up.
“Earlier this year I did some international races, like the Dubai Tour, and I could feel the big gap between myself and the World Tour riders. In many aspects I should learn from them and try to close the gap as quickly as possible.
“I believe this is a new start in my cycling career. I hope I can follow the team plan in the race, get myself into the atmosphere of the team and learn as much as I can.”
Head sport director Matt White:
“After the Tour of Dubai back in February, this will be the second time that Sun has raced against some top-level professionals, so he will have some idea of what to expect. It goes without saying that this kind of experience will be a great part of his ongoing development and we’re pleased to be able to offer this opportunity.”
“It’s an exciting time for Chinese cycling and with some big Asian races coming up in the latter part of the season for Mitchelton-BikeExchange, the experience of racing with a WorldTour squad will be good for form and condition and stand Sun in good stead for the rest of his targets in 2018.”
