Mitchelton-SCOTT women time trial to seventh place in Vargarda WestSweden

Sat 11 Aug 2018

Mitchelton-SCOTT women finished today's WorldTour team time trial event in Vargarda WestSweden in seventh place, not the result they were hoping for but having started the event one rider short, with just five riders, the team were satisfied with their efforts.

The five Mitchelton-SCOTT riders, Alex Manly, Lucy Kennedy, Gracie Elvin, Sarah Roy and Jess Allen passes the first intermediate time check one and a half minutes down on the fastest time, out of the top ten, however, during the the second half of the event they fought to claw back time to eventually finish in a respectable seventh place.

It was team Boels-Dolmans who claimed the race victory for a consecutive year, with the world champions, Team Sunweb, having to settle for second place.

With heavy rain before the start, the lengthy 42.5km event became even harder as the teams rolled down the ramp for the tough effort on wet roads with dark threatening skies and wind.

The first team to set the bench mark was Team Virtu Cycling with 56minutes and two seconds and then waited in the hot seat for the final teams to complete the distance.

After 31.9km at the second intermediate time check, Team Sunweb held the fastest time of 38minutes and 58seconds however, in the final 10km it was the defending champions Boels-Dolmans who upped the pace to take back six seconds and claim the TTT race win.

In two days time the riders head back to the start line for the 140km Vargarda WorldTour road race.

Martin Vestby - Sport director

"We got the maximum out of the team we have here today and did a smooth ride with no big mistakes.

"It of course would have been helpful to start with six riders but the five girls did a really great effort despite starting one rider short.

"It was Lucy Kennedy's first race after breaking her collarbone and having an operation after the Giro-Rosa and showed that she is on the right track, but as can be expected just missed a little race speed and intensity.

"There was a fair bit of rain, but all teams had more or less the same conditions so that made it more difficult but equal for everyone.

"Sarah Roy proved herself to be really strong and was driving the team with some big turns which is also promising for Monday's road race."

Vargarda WestSweden TTT results:

1. Boels-Dolmans 53:07
2. Team Sunweb 53:23
3. Cervelo-Bigla 53:54
7. Mitchelton-SCOTT 55:37
