ORICA-AIS full of confidence for BeNe Ladies TourFri 18 Jul 2014
ORICA-AIS will send a team of six riders full of confidence to the BeNe Ladies Tour in the Netherlands this weekend.
Starting tomorrow, the brand new two-day event features two road stages separated by a 9.6km individual time trial.
The ORICA-AIS line will be: Carlee Taylor, Emma Johansson, Jessie Maclean, Katrin Garfoot, Loes Gunnewijk and Shara Gillow.
Straight off the back of the Giro Rosa, sport director Gene Bates expects to see the team to be competitive in each of the three stages.
“Everyone has come out of the Giro fit and healthy,” Bates said.
“There are a few races happening at the moment, there is a big race in Germany and another one in France, so it probably won’t be as strong as the Giro that we raced in last week. The girls are going to be full of confidence.
“I think they will be really looking for stage wins and for some of them a good time trial and overall result also.
“For Katrin and Shara, this will be there last race before the Commonwealth Games so they will be fine tuning their time-trial skills on the second stage."
The two road stages, the first 103.6km and second 86km, are relatively flat but both feature cobble sections that will add an extra element to the racing. Bates doesn’t expect a large group to contest the sprints.
“With Dutch, Belgian racing you see a lot of attacking style racing, lots of wind and relatively flat courses,” Bates said.
“Even though it’s a flat course it is quite technical and generally speaking when you go to these type of races there is either a breakaway or a selective group that gets to the finish together.
“I would envisage a group on between ten and fifteen riders getting to the finish together on both the road stages.”
The team will go into the Tour with an open mind as to their leader, opting for a team meeting based on the results after day one.
“Generally when we go into a Tour like this we keep it open for the first stage,” Bates explains.
“We give everyone the opportunity to go for a stage result and set themselves up for the overall.
“Then after the first stage we will have a group meeting, assess things and decide who we are going to work for the next day.”
