ORICA-AIS up for a double challenge with Durango & Euskal Emakumeen Bira

ORICA-AIS is up for a double challenge with the Spanish one day race Durango-Durango Emakumeen Saria, which is immediately followed by the five-day stage race Euskal Emakumeen Bira.

The Australian outfit is looking forward to tackling the technical Spanish races, which are characterised by longer climbs.

Sports director Gene Bates: “Durango will be a good chance to have an opening up for Euskal. There won’t be too many expectations for the one day race, but it’s good for the girls to be able to get used to the terrain and set themselves up for Euskal.

“We’ve had quite a good period of racing, we performed well in Tuscany, Switzerland and over the weekend we did an excellent job in Belgium and Holland. We’ve got a few girls really going well and we’re in a position where we can do a few different things on the road.

“Katrin Garfoot’s been training really hard, Amanda Spratt and Lizzie Williams are getting stronger and stronger. It’s an exciting group to take to this terrain and I think we’re going to get some good results getting out of it.

Emma Johansson has obviously won the race previously, so she’ll be looking at a really good race there. And I’m sure that, after the first tough stage, one of the girls will really put their hands up there and we’ll look to support them and hopefully get the overall tour win.”
