ORICA-GreenEDGE Names Bayern Rundfahrt Squad, ObjectivesTue 21 May 2013
Known as an important preparation race for the Tour de France, Bayern Rundfahrt is a five day tour that covers 783.5 kilometres as riders travel across the Bavarian roads of Germany. The tour serves as perfect platform for the ORICA-GreenEDGE riders who are returning to racing after a long break.
At a different time in the season, ORICA-GreenEDGE may choose to target the general classification at this type of tour. Instead, the team will focus on individual stage wins. Sport Director Laurenzo Lapage expects that the 2013 edition will unfold in similar fashion to that in 2012, which saw three sprint stages, one day for the breakaway and one time trial.
“We are looking forward to racing in Germany,” said Lapage. “The roads are nice, the hotels are great and the races are very well organised.”
Learn about what Lapage hopes to see from each of his riders at Bayern Rundfahrt below:
Aidis Kruopis will be our man for the sprints. There will be two to three opportunities for the sprinters, and everyone knows that with a good Kroupis the team has a good chance for a stage win.
Daryl Impey could potentially be our surprise in the overall. Although we won’t go into the race with overall ambitions, sometimes less pressure works as the best motivation. In addition to Kruopis, Impey can also find results in the sprints.
Sebastian Langeveld is returning to racing after a long break. He will be one of the first riders we call on to do work for the team when we need it. This tour will be the beginning of Sebastian’s preparation for nationals and other goals later in the season.
Sam Bewley is making his comeback after breaking his collarbone in the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe. We expect Sam to be an important part of the sprint train for Aidis.
Simon Clarke has recently been training at altitude. For this reason, we will see day by day how Clarke will best work for the team.
Simon Gerrans will be our opportunist. He’ll pick his day or days to make the breakaway, and on other days he will be called upon to help the team.
Stuart O’Grady is in a very similar situation to Langeveld. He is also coming back from a long break after the spring classics and will be looking to raise his form as the team heads into the second half of the season. As always, Stuart is our most experienced rider and will provide strong leadership on the road.
