ORICA-SCOTT fight to fifth place on the time trial stage in Volta Ciclista a Catalunya

ORICA-SCOTT fought hard on today’s team time trial stage in Volta Cyclist a Catalunya to finish in fifth place.

The technical 41.3kilometre team time trial course in Banyloes began with a hilly first half followed by twisty descents and a fairly flat final ten kilometres.

With high ambitions for the event, the team rode the course multiple times which led them to produced a well paced ride today, finishing with a time of 50minutes and 19seconds.

In the end it wasn't enough as one of the final teams to start, Team Movistar, claimed the victory ahead of BMC racing team by two seconds.

“We went into the stage with really high hopes,” explained sport director Neil Stephens. “We thought we would start a little conservatively and bring it home at the finish.”

“At the end of the day we lost a fair chunk of time at the start, and even at the end when we brought it home, we brought it home well, but four other teams just did it better than us.

“It just wasn’t to be today, sometimes you aspire to do things and sometimes you’re just not up to the game and that was our case today. We certainly didn’t do a bad ride but it just wasn’t good enough today.”

With the race heading into the mountains tomorrow and the general classification still an ambition for the team, it was important that the riders continued to fight all the way until the finishing despite being down after the first time checks.

“At about 10kilometres today I told the boys we weren’t near the result but lets make sure we try and lose as little time as possible for Adam Yates.” Stephens continued.

“Certainly all the staff and all the riders gave it their best shot today but we weren’t quite on the target today.”

After the finish the jury decided that Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) was to be penalised by three minutes after pushing a team mate during the event and therefore Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) moved in to the overall race lead.

The final result leaves the team in a good position, remaining in contention in the overall classification with the first real mountain test tomorrow with a summit finish in La Molina.
