ORICA-SCOTT outside top ten on stage 5 at the Giro d'Italia

Wed 10 May 2017

ORICA-SCOTT has finished outside the top ten in a bunch kick finish on stage five after sprinter Caleb Ewan was caught behind in the closing metres.

Ahead Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) took his second stage win as general classification contender Adam Yates finished safely in the front part of the peloton for 13th place to hold onto third overall.

“It was a deceivingly tough start to the stage and even though we only had two riders in the break, the roads were not easy,” sport director Matt White said after the stage.

“We actually rode a really good race up until the final couple of kilometres. We contributed to the chase and we were well positioned.

“Unfortunately, coming into a roundabout with about a kilometre and a half to go we got swamped and we found ourselves poorly positioned with Caleb too far back and it was day done from that point as there just wasn’t the opportunity to re-group or re-position.”

How it happened:

A lumpy start to the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia was the only threat to another chance at forcing another sprint finish.

When a small, two rider group formed the breakaway, the tension eased and the job at hand became more simple.

The duo never extended to more than a four-minute advantage and ORICA-SCOTT, Quickstep and Lotto Soudal shared the chase efforts to force the bunch kick.

As they past the 15km to go marker, the race came back together and with a finishing circuit in Messina, it stayed like that until the line.

Gaviria sprinted to the line ahead of Jakub Mareczko (Willier Triestina – Selle Italia), with Yates in 13th and Ewan further back for 23rd.
