ORICA-SCOTT ready to defend in Giro dell'EmiliaWed 27 Sep 2017
ORICA-SCOTT head to Italy this weekend ready for the final one-day races of the season, starting off with the 223kilometre Giro dell'Emilia.
Last year Esteban Chaves stormed to victory in the event, after waiting patiently before making a well-timed attack in the final moments of the race to steal the win at the top of the tough two kilometre San Luca climb.
The Australian outfit return for the 2017 edition with a team fortified with talented climbers, looking for a consecutive victory.
“We can have an open plan with the type of riders we have lining up for this race,” sport director Dave McPartland explained. “I expected it to be a fairly controlled race with there being 13 WorldTour teams.”
“I think we will have numbers left there in the final on this course and then we can play our cards."
Chaves will be joined by 2016 Tour de France white jersey winner Adam Yates, Tour of Poland stage winner Jack Haig, Herald Sun Tour winner Damien Howson along with the experienced Roman Kreuziger and Ruben Plaza.
“It comes down to pure climbers that have really good condition. Esteban and Adam are of course strong and can ride well on this steep climb, but also Jack Haig has shown his top form recently,” McPartland continued. “It is a super hard one-day race and should be good for us.”
Last year the team animated much of the day with Vuelta a España stage winner Jens Keukeleire represented in the main breakaway of eight riders, as the rest of the team waited attentively in the peloton protecting Chaves ahead of the final laps.
Keukeleire will be back to play an important roles once again along with Spaniard Carlos Verona who rounds up the impressive eight-rider ORICA-SCOTT squad.
The race on Saturday 30th Septmeber features a lengthy 19kilometre gradual climb, the Passo Zanchetto, mid-way through the race then four tough laps including the San Luca climb which reaching an 18 percent gradient where we can expect fireworks.
