Roy sprints to second in promising start to Women’s Tour Down Under

Designated sprinter Sarah Roy has praised her lead out train after she raced to second place on the opening stage of the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under

After a reasonably uneventful day on the road, the peloton wound up for a bunch sprint into Birdwood with Letizia Paternoster (Trek Segafredo) getting the jump on a well-drilled Mitchelton-SCOTT team for the victory.

No break:
The peloton seemed comfortable with the expected stage one sprint, and as the peloton made its way from Hahndorf to Birdwood, no one was willing to challenge the sprint teams to form a breakaway.

Leading the way:
Taking positon at the front of the peloton in the final kilometres, Mitchelton-SCOTT set up their sprint train with Roy safely tucked on the wheel of teammate Gracie Elvin.

Trek-Segafredo sprinter Paternoster got the early jump on Roy, who responded to finish second on the stage.

Sprint seconds:
The availability of bonus seconds provided some mid-race action. Mitchelton-SCOTT challenged both the intermediate sprints and with two third places and second over the finish line, Roy moves into the blue sprinter’s jersey and sits just two seconds behind Paternoster in the overall classification ahead of stage two.

Sarah Roy – 2ndplace:
“The girls did an amazing lead out. It was so great that maybe I was a bit too relaxed because the lead out was so awesome. I was just really chill on the wheel and I saw Trek coming on my right side and thought ‘Oh a better go’. I left it too late but it’s super promising.

“We’re pretty happy with second. It’s not the win but it’s always a bit of a dramatic first race for the peloton coming in after a while of not racing in the off-season. There’s a few new teams and rider getting used to each other but for us as a team that our first order of a lead out and it’s promising.

“My goal was just to stick on my teammate Gracie’s (Elvin) wheel. I wasn’t looking too far ahead, I just had 100% confidence in my team and that was the right thing to do because we are pretty happy with that result.”
