Roy takes third on opening stage of the Tour of Chongming IslandFri 5 May 2017
ORICA-SCOTT women got off to a positive start in China at the Tour of Chongming Island today, with Australian sprinter Sarah Roy taking third place after great teamwork in a close run finale.
The former Australian criterium champion looked to be in fine form as a fast and furious eleven lap circuit race unfolded with Kirsten Wild (Cylance-Pro-Cyling) running out the eventual winner from the bunch sprint.
“We expected that it was going to be sprinters paradise and that was definitely how it turned out,” said sport director Martin Barras. “Eleven laps of a flat, wide and sheltered course meant that the nature of the finish was never going to be in doubt.”
“Breakaways tried a few times to get away, but there was never really going to be a chance for that to happen. As a team we rode a very controlled race and it turned out well for us, there are some minor improvements to be made, but we can be confident going into the next two days of racing.
“The girls remained composed and focused throughout the race, we knew when to show up and our positioning of Sarah at the front was faultless. Sarah mixed it up well against a very strong field of sprinters and we are happy with our result.
“Kirsten Wild started her sprint from the left and when Chloe Hosking (Ale-Cipollini) and Sarah started to come up from the right Wild closed the door. Nevertheless it was a great effort from Sarah and the team and a very auspicious start for us here in China.”
How it happened:
Stage one got underway on the Chinese Island of Chongming in overcast, but dry conditions with eleven laps of a flat 10.8kilometre circuit ahead.
A crash at the end of lap three slightly disrupted proceedings in an otherwise predictable race, with numerous attacks attempting to break clear but without much rope from the peloton.
The race was all together going into the final lap with the heavily expected bunch sprint starting to shape up.
ORICA-SCOTT were right in the mix as the finale approached and the lead out trains began to battle for position, it was Wild who won the sprint with Roy finishing strongly to take third place after a dramatic bike throw.
Tour of Chongming Island stage one results:
1. Kirsten Wild (Cylance-Pro-Cycling)
2. Chloe Hosking (Wiggle-High5)
3. Sarah Roy (ORICA-SCOTT)
