Second on final stage gives Garfoot second overall at Festival Elsy Jacobs

Sun 1 May 2016

Santos Tour Down Under winner Katrin Garfoot sprinted to second place on the final stage of the 2016 Festival Elsy Jacobs, which saw her move up on the general classification to second place overall.

The tough final day caused a shake up in the general classification after a powerful group of eleven riders broke away on the finishing laps and rode out to a two-minute advantage ahead of the remaining peloton, including the current race leader.

Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv) took the stage victory which subsequently gave her the overall victory after breaking away from the leaders to finish solo.

Sport director Gene Bates said the goal today was to win, and although the team wasn't able to achieve this he was pleased with the weekend's results as a whole, which rounds up a successful spring racing block for ORICA-AIS.

"The plan today was to really go for victory," Bates said. "The girls really believed in the plan and we thought we could pull it off. Things didn't quite go our way as Niewiadoma was just too strong in the end for us."

"Second on the stage is really good and second overall is a super result and it really just caps of a great spring for us.

"I am glad the girls got the results that they really deserve, it's a great way to finish off this period."

How it happened:

After a wet and bitterly cold stage yesterday, the teams started stage two in Garnich with clear blue skies and pleasant temperatures.

As the stage began it didn't take long for attacks to start and four riders were able to ride out to a sizeable advantage.

The quadruplet successfully opened up their lead to four minutes but as they enter the 9.8kilometre finishing laps which included two climbs per lap, the escapees began to split up on the tough sections and saw their advantage plummet.

The leaders were soon swallowed up as a strong group of eleven riders jumped clear. The group contained a variety of teams and two representing ORICA-AIS, Garfoot and Rachel Neylan.

Suited to the climbs, Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv) tried a solo attempt and rode out to a 30second ahead of the group with only three laps remaining.

The remaining main peloton including the current race leader, hovered around two minutes behind the leaders making the general classification wide open again, looking like the winner would come from this powerful leading group.

The leaders began to attack in an attempt to bridge across to the lone leader but were unsuccessful in their attempts.

Going into the final lap Niewiadoma held a 45second lead and managed to hold on despite a fierce chase from behind, to take the stage victory and the overall classification win.

Garfoot and Neylan sprinted in placing second and tenth respectively, which catapulted Garfoot into second place overall. After winning the opening prologue, Annemiek Van Vleuten finished the three-day race winning the green points classification jersey.
