Second victory in three days for time trial ace Van Vleuten at the Boels Rental Ladies Tour

Thu 31 Aug 2017

Dutch time trial champion Annemiek van Vleuten has stolen the show once again at the Boels Rental Ladies Tour, claiming another stage victory in the individual time trial on today’s stage three.

The stage one prologue winner blasted around the 16.9kilometre course to stop the clock four seconds faster than her nearest rival, European champion Ellen van Dijk (Team Sunweb), to take another win for ORICA-SCOTT and extends her lead in the general classification.

"I really looked forward to this day, I actually wasn’t too nervous about it,” said van Vleuten after her victory. “It was my own time trial today and I wanted to test myself and not think about what the other competitors did.”

“My goal was to go as hard as possible, maximum to the finish line. Of course it's very nice that I'm able to win in a long time trial also and to take more time in the overall.”

With three stages still to come, including a hilly stage in Limburg, van Vleuten has a nine second advantage over her nearest rival and is looking forward to the challenge.

“I have a good feeling and confidence now and in the coming days I will do everything to try and win,” Van Vleuten continued.

“There are still three good hard stages to come, my shape is good and I'm going to fight. Tomorrow is possibly the last day for the sprinters but we will stay focussed now until Sunday.”

How it happened:

Stage three of the tour was one for the time trial riders with a 16.9kilometre predominantly flat race against the clock.

In the early stages Hannah Barnes (Canyon-Sram) led the proceedings with a time of 23minutes and 48seconds.

Georgia Williams produced a solid ride with 24minutes and 11seconds in the early stages but as the overall race contenders began to finish, the fastest time continued to plummet.

Former world time trial champion Linda Villumsen (Velo Concept) held on to the race lead with a time of 22minutes 38seconds for a lengthy period of time, but it was Van Vleuten, the current race leader, who produced the fastest time of 22minutes and 12seconds to take the stage honours.

Tomorrow's stage four is 121kilometres in length from Gennep to Weert.
