Several options for ORICA-SCOTT women ahead of Crescent VargardaThu 10 Aug 2017
UCI Women’s WorldTour racing continues at the weekend for ORICA-SCOTT women at the challenging one-day road race event Crescent Vargarda in Sweden.
The Australian outfit line up for the hilly race with a strong and capable squad boasting more than one option to achieve a good result in the 11th edition of the event that has been part of the WorldTour since 2016.
Two-time Australian road race champion Gracie Elvin lines up alongside compatriots Sarah Roy and Amanda Spratt in a versatile team that has characteristics both for a sprint or a breakaway contested finale.
“We have a really strong team going into this race with several riders who could deliver a result for us,” explained sport director Gene Bates. “It depends how the race pans out and it’s a tricky course with several small laps at the start, one long and lumpy lap in the middle with gravel sectors before heading back to the finishing circuit.”
“The concluding circuits are short, but include a difficult climb and whilst not being critically hard, the stress, duration, gravel and the repetition of the sharp climbs add up throughout the race and will take it's toll.”
Australian national criterium champion Jessica Allen completes the line up with compatriot Alex Manly and another of the team’s consistently strong performers in 2017, New Zealander Georgia Williams.
“Our main objective is to try and get on the podium,” continued Bates. “I think we can achieve this with several riders, either in the sprint or a breakaway finish. It’s a strong and aggressive team we have for the weekend with in form and hungry riders.”
“We will aim to conserve early and make sure that we have good numbers going into the final. It’s a course that if you have strength in numbers and fresher legs towards the end then you can make a big difference.”
The race covers 152kilometres over a challenging course that heads out into the Swedish countryside before turning back into Vagarda for short finishing circuits that include numerous ascents of a sharp climb before the finale.
