Simon Yates - The new UCI WorldTour leaderMon 17 Sep 2018
Recently crowned Vuelta a Espana champion Simon Yates is the new men’s WorldTour leader thanks to his most successful season to date.
Yates claimed victory on stage 14 and led the Spanish race for no less than ten days, which added to his three stage wins and 13 days in the Maglia Rosa at the Giro d’Italia. In total, the 26-year old has eight WorldTour victories and 19 other WorldTour top-ten finishes in 2018.
The recent results see the Briton move up nine places in the rankings, leap-frogging world champion Peter Sagan and putting a Mitchelton-SCOTT rider back into the WorldTour lead for the second time this season, after Daryl Impey previously ranked number one throughout February.
Yates is now the second Mitchelton-SCOTT rider currently in the WorldTour lead, joining Giro Rosa champion Annemiek van Vleuten who leads the women’s category. It’s fitting for the pair, who delivered the Australian outfit their first men’s and women’s Grand Tour victories this year.
“To see Simon at the top of the WorldTour rankings is testament to a lot of hard work and incredible results this season. As a team, we are especially proud of the fact he is ‘home grown’. We saw him as a talent when we signed him as a neo-pro in 2014, but to witness how far he has come and how quickly he has achieved such success is incredible.
"Not only have we enjoyed a fantastic three weeks of racing, winning our first ever men's Grand Tour, but we now lead the UCI WorldTour in both the men and women's rankings.
"2018 has been a fantastic season for both our men and women's teams and to have riders leading the WorldTour in both categories is a great acknowledgement of how consistent our riders have been throughout the year."
