Briton Adam Yates climbed to sixth place today for Mitchelton-SCOTT on the first summit finish stage in Criterium du Dauphine, which moves him up the general classification to seventh place.

Julian Alaphilippe (Quickstep-Floors) accelerated to take the stage win with Gianni Moscon (Team Sky) moving into the race lead.

Rapid start

With a flat section before the hilly finale, everybody wanted to be in the day's breakaway and the pace was high from the start.

After one hour of racing the peloton covered 52kilometres and no riders were able to break free. It was after 82kilometres of racing when the elastic finally snapped and eight riders escaped.

The group rode out over four minutes as they started over the penultimate climb, the Hors category, Col du Mont Noir.

Action on the Col

Towards the top of the HC climb, the breakaway fragmented with Dario Cataldo (Astana) attacking and leading the race solo.

The other breakaway riders dangled between the leader and peloton which crested the top of the climb just under three minutes behind.

The race leaders Team Sky led the chase and gradually the time gap dropped down and the front chase group continued to shrink.

With five kilometres remaining the leaders held less than one minute as they started the final climb up to the finish. Yates had Damien Howson for company until the catch was made and the front of the race reduced significantly.

Yates climbed into sixth on the stage to remain in contention for the overall with three hard stages to come.

Damien Howson

"It was a super aggressive start, every team wanted to be in the breakaway, we did over 50kilometres after one hour of racing so it was a pretty intense start.

"It was basically all uphill to the finish. We had a Hors category climb around 50kilometres to the finish which caused the group to be a bit more select.

"The climbers got the chance to test their legs on the climb, myself included getting back into racing. I was happy with how I was feeling and was able to help Yates until the last few kilometres.

"Adam placed pretty well and positioned himself well coming into the next three days.

"Tomorrow has a pretty hard uphill start, flat in the middle then a Hors cat finish for the climbers once again to test their legs at the finish."
