Sixth place for Edmondson in the Tour de Luxembourg opening prologue

Wed 1 Jun 2016

ORICA-GreenEDGE made a promising start to the Tour de Luxembourg with a strong performance from Alex Edmondson in the opening 2.9kilometre prologue.

The 21-year-old track star excelled on the challenging, technical city centre race against the clock to finish in a respectable sixth place.

Sport director Matt Wilson was happy with the overall result which saw Jempy Drucker (BMC Racing Team) steal the victory in wet conditions.

"Caleb Ewan and Alex Edmondson had really strong rides," explained Wilson. "It's such a short race you have to start fast, you have to finish fast, so for these guys who were really being cautious on the corners they both finished really well."

"It was raining for the whole prologue, really terrible conditions. It was one of those days where it was dangerous, really wet, it had cobbles so we are happy that all the guys could get through safety."

How it happened:

As predicted the rain came down as the riders lined the streets around Luxembourg ready for the opening lung buster 2.9kilometre race.

The course provided many obstacles for the riders to contend with including a fast, technical down hill with sharp corners followed by sections of wet cobbles and a sharp cobble climb up towards the finishing line.

As the first riders completed the distance it looked that those who could safely make it around the course with the best bike handling skills were the top placed.

One of the early starters, Drucker held the fastest time of four minutes 20seconds for the majority of the evening seeming like no one could knock him off the top spot.

As the final few riders crossed the finish line the times got closer to the bench mark yet no one was able to beat it.

Edmondson demonstrated his speed over the shorter distances, having a solid ride to finish in sixth place (+0.07) with 21-year-old Ewan riding himself into eighth place, just nine seconds down on the winner.

Tomorrow the peloton face a lumpy 170kilometre stage one containing four second category climbs averaging at five percent with the riders all still in close contention.
