Smith top finisher for Mitchelton-SCOTT on stage 3 of BinckBank Tour

Wed 14 Aug 2019

New Zealand’s Dion Smith was Mitchelton-SCOTT’s top finisher in 45th place, in what was yet another sprint finish at BinckBank Tour today.

A crash held up some of the peloton on the final corner, but ahead Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) won his third consecutive stage in a photo finish.

An uneasy bunch:
As another small group of four rode off the front early in proceedings, it seemed like a stage similar to those we have completed in the last two days.

But, despite growing out quickly to two minutes, the bunch never seemed at ease and with 65km to go, the race was back together.

Having pushed the re-set button, a new group of three riders managed to sneak off the front and held off the anxious bunch until the final four kilometres before the final sprint.

Dion Smith:
"With a circuit like today you can always predict that it won’t be settled and that’s exactly what happened. The first break got reeled in with the pace being naturally so high from the nervousness and everyone wanting to be at the front, and we also had some rain which added some spice.

"We all stayed out of trouble today which is always a win on days like today. The final few kilometres were super fast with a lot of small and technical roads. A couple of us were up there near the end but by that stage our priority was to stay safe and look towards tomorrow and the time trial on Saturday which will suit the team we have here really well."
