Giro del Belvedere winner Robert Stannard maintained his excellent run of recent results in Italian one day races for Mitchelton-BikeExchange with fourth place at the GP San Vendemiano in the Veneto.

The Chinese outfit controlled proceedings at the start and kept the early breakaway in check at two to three minutes before ramping up the pace into the hilly local circuits around San Vendemiano as the front of the race started to split.

Stannard and Sam Jenner were both around the front groups as the initial break came back and fresh attacks sprang away,

The last time over the Ca’dell Poggio climb and a group of ten that included Stannard was chasing a lone leader into the descent with Jenner’s group not far behind.

Fresh attacks came throughout the closing kilometres as the group split and reformed and split again before coming back together for a bunch sprint in the centre of town.

Stannard finished strongly and crossed the line in fourth place to make it one victory, one second and one fourth place from the last three Italian races.

Sport director James Victor:

“After Rob’s excellent results recently, he is going into every race as a marked man and it’s making for some exciting racing with lots of fight from the team.”

Callum Scoston did a good job of controlling and then bringing back the early breakaway move before Brayan Chaves did what he could to help Rob and Sam out on the climbs.

“We had a good race and knew that it would be tough, Rob is showing that he is in really good shape ahead of the Bretagne Classic and he may have hit the podium again today were it not for an unfortunate chain slip ahead of the sprint, but the signs are positive and we look ahead to our next objectives now.”
