Strong finish from Stannard for fourth on stage four in Bretagne

Sat 28 Apr 2018

An attacked filled fourth stage of the Tour de Bretagne saw Robert Stannard take fourth place for Mitchelton-BikeExchange from a reduced chasing group after making his way to the front on a fast and animated stage.

Despite the repeated action and numerous attempts, a full-scale breakaway never managed to gain any significant advantage over the attentive peloton and the attacks continued to fly into the finishing circuits with 30kilometres to go.

A lone leader somehow took the initiative into the final three kilometres, after going off the front of a small group that held Stannard and three others some 30seconds ahead of the peloton.

Over the last few hundered metres a furious chase unfolded behind, but Julien Antomarchi (Equipe-Roubaix-LM) held his lead to the line to take the stage win with Stannard sprinting to third in the chasing group and fourth on the day.

Robert Stannard – 4th:

It was another super hard day with guys trying to get away all day from start to finish with nothing ever getting more than a minute. I spent the day being attentive but probably burning more energy than I needed just to be safe and hold a spot near the front.”

“There were a couple of big threatening moves that did break away, but the pace was so full gas not even they could escape. The finish laps were hard and include a hill up to one kilometre to go, and I managed to maintain a good position which was vital over the climb.

“The last time up I attacked with two others and we just stayed away to the finish behind the lone rider that won. I think the final did suit me better than the previous stages, because it was harder but to get fourth I just made the move at the right time.”
