Strong start for Mitchelton-SCOTT women at the Giro-Rosa

Fri 6 Jul 2018

Mitchelton-SCOTT women kicked of the 2018 edition of the Giro-Rosa with a close second place in today's opening 15.5kilometre team time trial.

In what they described as ´their best team time trial ride ever,' the Australian outfit stopped the clock with a blistering time of 18minutes and 26seconds, just one second off the victory, which the current team time trial world champions Team Sunweb claimed.

In hot conditions in Verbania, the seven-rider team started as the penultimate team down the ramp, with a predominately flat, fast 15kilometre loop ahead of them. As they began the time to beat was 18”51, set by team Movistar.

As the final five teams completed the distance, the fastest time continued to change with Team Sunweb eventually proving to be the fastest team on the day averaging 50.4km/h. Boels-Dolmans rounded out the podium with a time 12seconds a drift.

Mitchelton-SCOTT go into tomorrow's first road stage in a strong position on the general classification and with a lot of confience in their form, after their top team performance.

Amanda Spratt

"We are a little bit surprised with it being just one second from the win. Team Sunweb are the world champions and I think this is by far the best team time trial we have done. We thought it would be a little more and I don't think we have never been this close to the win in a TTT.

"Everybody gave it all they could today and we can be happy, it is a great way to start this race."

Annemiek van Vleuten

"It was the best time I think we could have done. It was really close, we have trained a lot in the team time trial discipline and it is really nice for the girls to see that the hard work pays off already. It was a really good team time trial for us so we are all happy."

Gracie Elvin

"It is a lightyear ahead of any other team time trial we have done, one second is painful if you don't win and come second but we can come away super happy and confident and not just for this race but for the rest of the season and looking to the world championships TTT."

"We had to finish with as many as possible, it was really about looking after Annemiek and Spratty today, that was our key priority and staying safe.

"Personally that was probably one of the hardest bike rides I've ever done, following the time trial world champion Annemiek and then Spratty and Roy, they were so strong at the end. I was giving absolutely everything, mentally I could do it as I am 100% commited to these girls."
