Three in top 10 on final time trial wraps up Tour of SloveniaSun 17 Jun 2018
Having occupied the hot seat earlier in the day, Mitchelton-SCOTT has concluded the Tour of Slovenia with three riders in the top 10 on the final stage time trial today.
New Zealand’s Jack Bauer was the team’s top finisher in fourth position, 38seconds behind stage and overall winner Primoz Roglic (Team LottoNL Jumbo). Australian Luke Durbridge and Roger Kluge finished in sixth and seventh place respectively.
It was a solid end to the team’s Tour of Slovenia, that finished without the desired stage win but with two podiums thanks to Caleb Ewan (3rd, stage 2) and Daryl Impey (2nd, stage 3).
The hot seat:
Of the early starters, it was Kluge who proved the fastest, finishing the course in a time of 25:33.72.
Kluge occupied the hot seat until Jan Tratnik (CCC) went an impressive 20seconds faster. Tratnik’s time was strong enough to hold off solid rides by Durbridge and Bauer, only to fall at the last hurdle as race leader Roglic went an incredible 27.08seconds quicker to dominate the stage and extend his advantage on the final overall leader board.
Falling just short of the stage win:
With stage wins the target for Mitchelton-SCOTT at the five-stage Tour of Slovenia, the Australian outfit put themselves in the best position, particularly in the first three stages that best suited their characteristics.
An unfortunate fall to sprint leader Ewan denied him the chance to contest stage one, but he recovered to sprint in the second opportunity the following day, managing third place.
The team supported an in-form Impey on the third stage, with the South African champion falling agonisingly short on the line for second.
Jack Bauer – 4th place:
“Today final day here was a short 21km time trial and Durbo and I were looking to podium on a course that on paper really suited our characteristics.
“We rode the course this morning and really liked what we saw.
“I think we were both hoping for more once we were out there, personally I fell apart over a really grippy final three kilometres, but hats off to Roglic for delivering in front of a home crowd.”
Laurenzo Lapage – Sport Director:
“The team work this week was perfect. Everyone knew their roles and did what was asked of them. The team created chances to go for stage wins and we were close several times.
“Luke and Jack had good riders today and I think if Luke wasn’t sick in the days before he could have been even stronger. Roger Kluge also surprised us with a really good time trial today.”
