Top ten for Groves on stage one in China as Jiang holds onto white

Tue 18 Sep 2018

Australian Kaden Groves sprinted to tenth place on stage one of the Tour of China part two today as the second day of racing concluded in the anticipated bunch kick.

Covering 99.4kilometres, the stage was billed as the Yongzhou Nngyuan stage and despite a couple of small climbs boasted a parcours to suit the sprinters.

Mitchelton-BikeExchange kept their powder dry in the peloton as a few small breakaway moves drifted off the front before the whole peloton came back together again for the fast finale.

Colombian Juan Sebastian Molano (Manzana-Postobon) won the stage with Groves in tenth and both Sam Jenner and Zhi Hui Jiang crossing the line in the peloton to maintain their overall positions and more importantly, the white jersey for best Asian rider.

Sport director James Victor:

“It went well for us today, we kept Zhi Hui Jiang in a good position to ensure that he finished safely in the bunch to keep hold of the Asian rider’s jersey which is very important to us and with no change on GC we have Sam and Kaden second and third.”

“The guys who raced part one last week are beginning to feel some fatigue and understanding that the balance is important to share the workload with the guys who have come in fresh, but everyone did well today, and we’re pleased with the outcome.

“As we mentioned yesterday, the penultimate stage time trial is the important stage and we saw the expected sprint battle today. There are a lot of team’s who will be out of the running in the ITT and for them it’s important to go for the stage result.

“The guys brought Kaden up to the front well, maybe a bit early, but he had a go in the sprint and did well to place in the top ten. We saw in yesterday’s prologue that Kaden and Sam are in good shape and we head into tomorrow’s stage with in a positive place.”
