Trentin seventh on messy final stage of the Tour of Gunagxi

Tue 22 Oct 2019

Italian Matteo Trentin grabbed another top-10 finish as the final stage of the Tour of Gunagxi came to a close with the expected bunch sprint.

In his final race in Mitchelton-SCOTT colours, Trentin was forced to unclip in the closing metres to a avoid crash in the final corner, spelling an end to his hopes of victory.

Final Day

Five riders formed the breakaway on the final day of racing in 2019, and despite two categorised climbs in the second half of the stage, the peloton were set on another bunch sprint to finish off the six days of action in China.

As a result, the five escapees were never given much of an advantage, with the gap not going out to any more than four minutes on the 168km stage. However, despite the small advantage, the bunch were made to work hard to bring back the attackers before the finish, with the race only coming back together inside the final five kilometres.

Messy Finish

The wide and wet roads on the run to the line made for a messy finale as the sprint teams battled for position ahead of the final corner, while Neo-pro Edoardo Affini drove the pace at the head of the bunch as he looked to drag Trentin and Australian Alex Edmondson into position for the sprint.

However, a crash in the final turn put paid to the team’s plans with Trentin forced to take avoiding action, while Edmondson was caught behind with the majority of the bunch. A number of sprinters made it through the carnage and Pascal Ackermann (BORA – hansgrohe) got the jump to take the win, with Trentin rolling home in seventh.

Matteo Trentin:
“The sprint was really messy as it only rained today and the road was really slippery. We wanted to try to set Edmo up for the final, but we got lost in the chaos. I had to unclip to avoid the riders that were sliding towards me and at that point the sprint was gone.”

“It’s not what we wanted but I feel good actually after the week of racing, even if I would have preferred to say goodbye to the team with a victory.”

“It was two fantastic seasons with a lot of beautiful moments together! So tonight I will have a good beer with the guys here to thank them all before we all go for the off season!”

Matt Wilson (Sports Director):
"We had a shot at the final but with the wet roads it was really messy and the guys misjudged it, so it’s a little bit of a disappointing week results wise, we were hoping to come away with at least a stage, but it just didn’t unfold that way for us."

"But I can’t really fault the effort from the riders, it was an awesome effort. It’s the end of the season now and we’ve equalled our best ever wins for a season, it’s disappointing not to get than one extra win for our most ever, but on to next year."
