Trentin top finisher for Mitchelton-SCOTT at Tour of Flanders

Sun 7 Apr 2019

European champion Matteo Trentin was the top finisher for Mitchelton-SCOTT at today’s Tour of Flanders, the Australian team not featuring in the finale of the second monument of the season.

Trentin finished in 21st position, just under two-minutes down on solo winner Alberto Bettiol (EF Education First) after losing touch on the Kruisberg and being unable to re-join.

Alberto Bettiol (EF Education First) was the surprise victor of the day, attacking inside the final 20km and holding off an unorganised chase from behind.

Matteo Trentin:
“The only option is to try again next year.”

“I was there and the whole team had done their job really well but I just didn’t have the legs and on the Kruisberg I was a complete black out.

“From there my race was over. The split was made and I could have tried to attack my group but the race was gone by then.”

Laurenzo Lapage:
“It was one of the fastest Flanders in recent years. As a team, there’s nothing to say because everyone did the job we asked them to do in the meeting.

“Matteo was there until the final with the favourites until he ran out of legs and in a race like Flanders you can’t recover - once the light is out, it’s done.”

Tour of Flanders Results:
1. Alberto Bettiol (EF Education First) 6:18:49
2. Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck – Quick Step) +0:14
3. Alexander Kristof (UAE Team Emirate) +0:17
21. Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-SCOTT) +1:58
