Twelth place for Garfoot in the Pajot Hills ClassicWed 29 Mar 2017
Dual Australian champion Katrin Garfoot sprinted into twelth place for ORICA-SCOTT on today’s mid-week Belgium race the Pajot Hills Classic.
Despite racing over tough climbs such as the Muur van Geerardsbergen the race concluded with a bunch sprint in Gooik won by Annette Edmondson (Wiggle-High5).
The race was a great opportunity for the team to test the legs ahead of the next WorldTour event this coming Sunday and the team performance throughout the race gives sport director Gene Bates confidence going into the next races.
“The girls did everything right today but in the end it finished in a sprint,” said Bates. "We tried to make it as hard as we could over the three main climbs, so Jess Allen did a really good lead out into the Muur and the race split to around 25 riders, and then Katrin went on the Bosberg and it split again."
"After the climbs we turned into a big headwind section and all the groups basically came back together and then it was pretty much flat all the way to the finish."
Showing her climbing form, Garfoot led over the top of the Muur van Geerardsbergen, Bosberg and Congoberg to claim three different GPM sprints primes.
“Katrin was strong over the climbs which is a positive for us heading into the coming classics races,” Bates continued. “Today was a good day for us in terms of the process and our build up to the next race."
"Some of the riders had a good hit out ahead of Flanders and the other girls now look ahead to the Ardennes races."
How it happened:
Despite numerous attacks early on the peloton remained mostly intact for the initial 50kilomerres of the race.
Once the riders climbed the Muur van Geeradsbergen for the first time, the peloton shattered into group leaving just 30riders in the front.
Garfoot dominated over the top of the Muur and the Bosberg to take both GPM sprints but soon after the chase group rejoined, swelling the front to a group 60 riders strong.
With two laps of 22kilometres to conclude the race, riders continued to try and break away but with non able to stick, the day finished with an uphill sprint.
With the main goal of the week, the Ronde van Vlaanderen, on Sunday the team remain in Belgium with time to rest and recover before the next WorldTour race and goal.
