Two stage wins and points jersey cap off successful Tour de Langkawi for Ewan and ORICA-GreenEDGE

Neo-pro Caleb Ewan has finished the 2015 Tour de Langkawi with two stage wins and the sprinter’s jersey as the eight-day Tour drew to a close in Kuala Lumpa today.

Along with his stage three and six victories, Ewan won the points classification by 18 points, held the yellow leader’s jersey for four days and finished with three second places, including today’s final stage where he finished behind Andrea Guardini (Astana Pro Team).

The 20-year-old will now head to Europe with four UCI classified victories under his belt, following his two in Australia at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

“It’s been a really successful Tour, we are really happy,” sport director Matt Wilson said.

“With the points jersey and two stage wins, it’s a big box ticked.”

The final day of racing in Malaysia was another for the sprinters.

The eighth stage, at just 96.1km in length, left from Kuala Kubu Bharu and completed six laps of a local Kuala Lumpur circuit.

After 30km and various attempts, four riders established the day’s breakaway. As they entered the final circuit, the quartet held their biggest lead of the day at just one-minute 15seconds.

They started the bell lap with 16seconds advantage, but ORICA-GreenEDGE was determined for the bunch sprint and the race was back together with two kilometres to race.

“It was an interesting stage,” Wilson said. “There were time bonuses up for grabs and the minor placings on GC were tight so it was really hot at the start.”

“But in the end we got no help at all, we had to use three guys to catch the break leaving only three left for the sprint.

“They got a little messed up in the finish and Caleb had to come from a long way back but managed to get on Guardini’s wheel and almost mowed him down in the finish.”
