Van Vleuten and ORICA-SCOTT seal the overall victory at the Boels Rental Ladies Tour

Sun 3 Sep 2017

34-year-old Annemiek van Vleuten has sealed the overall victory today at the Boels Rental Ladies Tour having led the race from day one.

The Dutch time trial champion dominated in the timed events, claiming two stage victories and began today’s final stage with a comfortable 43second lead.

The whole ORICA-SCOTT team committed throughout the six-day race for their leader van Vleuten and successfully worked to defend the jersey today as the breakaway survived with Janneke Ensing (Ale-Cipollini) taking the stage win.

“I am super happy and proud of my team and it is also a big relief to finish this off with the win,” said Van Vleuten. “It is my second time that I have taken a big stage race victory and this race I really tried for it from day one.”

“It is never easy, it is nerve racking to defend the jersey sometimes but I have been a part of a really great team here. Today wasn’t easy for our team, we had to ride almost 150kilometres at the front.

“We did it really well and it was good we didn’t burn all our matches too early. I still had Gracie Elvin and Sarah Roy with me at the finish to keep me safe after Georgia Williams and Jess Allen did all of the early work.

“It has been a really great week for the team.”

How it happened:

The Australian outfit began the final 160kilometre stage with a sizeable overall advantage and a course suited to their strengths.

In the opening five kilometres of the stage, 11riders were able to break free and rapidly opened up an advantage of two and a half minutes.

With no real threat to the GC, ORICA-SCOTT were happy to sit back in the peloton controlling the distance to the leaders.

90kilometres into the lengthy stage and the main peloton began to fragment as 25riders formed at the front with the breakaway still hovering around two minutes ahead.

The group eventually swelled as groups behind rejoined and immediately after, two riders jumped across to the breakaway as the race entered the final 50kilometre loop.

Entering the final 15kilometres, fireworks began in the breakaway as the 13 leaders began to split up, looking for ways to take the stage victory.

ORICA-SCOTT remained in the bunch, out of danger protecting van Vleuten and continued to monitor the gap to the leaders.

In the end, Ensing took the stage win with ORICA-SCOTT able to cross the line celebrating after dominating the six-day tour.
