Van Vleuten fights to second on the stage and takes more time overall at Boels Rental Ladies Tour

Sat 2 Sep 2017

Two-time stage winner Annemiek van Vleuten has dominated once again on today’s penultimate stage of the Boels Rental Ladies Tour to take second place on the stage and extend her overall race lead.

In the final 30kilometres, the Dutch time trial champion launched multiple attacks, eventually getting away with Olympic Champion Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans) in the final 10kilometres.

The duo opened up a 40second advantage with Van der Breggen eventually claiming the stage win and van Vleuten taking valuable seconds overall with just one stage remaining.

“Another really great day for the team again today,” said sport director Gene Bates. “Everybody had a job todo today and they did that. It wasn’t until the circuits we had to begin riding on the front to control the group.”

“Obviously Annemiek is in great shape, she created the move with herself and Van der Breggen. The great thing is she has gained more time overall.”

Tomorrow’s final stage is a lengthy one at 159kilometres, the Australian outfit will start as the race leaders ready to fight for the final victory.

“We need to approach tomorrow cautiously,” Bates continued. “We will treat it like a one-day race, it is going to be a long day with really tough circuit with a lot of climbing.”

“Anything can happen in these races so we will be diligent and race the way we have been all week.”

How it happened:

After four-days of racing, the peloton finally headed into the hills of Limburg for a 141kilometre lumpy stage.

ORICA-SCOTT and van Vleuten began the day with a nine second advantage overall and worked relentlessly to defend the jersey.

Like previous stages, attacks came thick and fast, but no breakaway was able to get away in the early stages, it came down to the climbs which caused a significant split in the peloton.

A front group of around 30riders clipped off the front and quickly left the remaining peloton behind.

After 115kilometres of racing, three riders tried to breakaway from the front group and opened up a 30second lead. ORICA-SCOTT quick to react, led the chase to draw them back in.

Van Vleuten was the next to stir the front group, attacking and bridging across to the leading trio but shortly after the group returned back together.

The action didn’t stop with van Vleuten racing aggressively, launching many attacks constantly at the head of the race.

Over the final Queen of the Mountains prime, with 10kilometres to go, van Vleuten and Van der Breggen broke away and led the race, surviving all the way to the finish line.
