Verona climbs to fourth place on the Queen stage at the Tour of Guangxi

Fri 19 Oct 2018

Carlos Verona showed his late season form today by climbing to fourth place for Mitchelton-SCOTT on a summit finish stage at the Tour of Guangxi.

After a breakaway duo was caught in the final five kilometres as the road went up, Gianni Moscon (SKY) attacked solo with 500metres to go and held on for the stage win, with Verona fighting hard behind to fourth place and moving up to sixth place overall.

Two away

In the opening 10km Roger Kluge and two other riders jumped ahead of the peloton and opened up a small gap. Unlike the other days, the peloton seemed happy to let them go, as the gap increased out to one minute 30seconds, Kluge decided to sit up and wait for the peloton with it being such a small breakaway combination.

Pascal Eenkhorn (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Stefan Kung (BMC) reached a maximum advantage of over three minutes and hovered most of the day around the two minute mark.

Uphill finish

The 152km stage concluded with a first category climb reaching the finish line in Nongla, once the road started to go up, Eenkhorn was caught by the peloton and soon after Kung was also caught and the general classification battle started.

Verona held on for forth place to move himself up the general classification with just two stages remaining.

"The final climb was very explosive, it was only three kilometres long and the approach to the climb was more like a bunch sprint finish than an uphill finish.

"I lost my team mates and I started the climb quite far behind, but I had green card to go as long as possible and I said to myself that I needed to take this last chance to do something for myself wearing the Mitchelton-SCOTT colours. I didin’t panic and I rode the climb as hard as I could from the bottom to the top, passing many riders and without looking behind, to eventually finish 4th.

"I knew that I had good legs, because last week in the Italian one-day races I could do a decent job for my team mates, so today it was all about using the head to go up to that climb and I am happy to could be up there for the team, but specially for myself. It has been a long summer training without much racing and I am happy that somehow all the work has come out now.

"Now that I know that I have the legs and also the motivation, let’s try to fight for the final podium of the race together with my Mitchelton-SCOTT mates. It has been two amazing years with the team, and that would be the best way to say thanks for our time together."
