Worlds prep and stage wins the focus for ORICA-AIS in final race of seasonMon 1 Sep 2014
World championship preparation and stage wins will be the focus for ORICA-AIS going into their final race of the season, the Boels Rental Ladies Tour starting tomorrow.
With options for both flat and hilly terrain, the squad will prioritise a day-by-day result over any general classification considerations.
The six riders for the Boels Rental Ladies Tour are: Annette Edmondson, Emma Johansson, Jessie MacLean, Melissa Hoskins, Shara Gillow and Valentina Scandolara.
The outfit will take a dual focus for the last race of the season sport director Gene Bates explained.
“We’ve probably got two big focuses at this tour,” Bates said.
“One is final loading and preparation for the team’s time trial leading into worlds.
“We have Jessie MacLean and Annette Edmondson coming back into the team for that specific reason. It’s a good six-day tour leading into the world championships and is the ideal preparation.
“The other focus is to get a really good stage result along the way.”
With a variety of skill sets in the squad, Bates said there were a number of stage options for the team.
“We have got a fairly broad spectrum team for this race and we definitely have some good riders that are up for stages,” he said.
“Edmondson and Hoskins are suited more for the flat sprint stages and we will be looking to capitilise on that with them and then we have Johansson and Scandolara for the more hilly stages.
“We have a good spread of riders and there is a bit of everything for everyone.”
Without the general classification focus, the added flexibility will support the two main focuses of the team.
“We will go in chasing stage victories to start with without having the added pressure of overall to contend with,” Bates said.
“We will play it day by day, it could well be that we get to the second last day and we are in a position to chase a general classification result but for now that is not our focus.”
