Yates climbs up to second overall after a tough penultimate stage in Criterium du DauphineSat 9 Jun 2018
Briton Adam Yates fought hard through the tough penultimate stage of Criterium du Dauphine today to finish in fifth place on the summit finish and move up to second place overall.
Peio Bilbao (Astana) attacked in the final kilometres to take a solo victory with Yates fighting hard behind to close the distance and eventually finish 26seconds behind jump up the overall classification.
Two in the move
Carlos Verona and Rob Power represented Mitchelton-SCOTT in a large breakaway of 27riders that formed in the early stages as the road immediately went up the first of two Hors category climbs.
With many teams represented, the pressure was off the GC contenders behind and the group hovered around two minutes ahead for large chunk of the short 110kilometre stage.
Front of the race splits
As the breakaway group headed up the second HC climb, the group shrunk in size with Power remaining at the head of the race for Mitchelton-SCOTT alongside eight other riders.
Riders attempted to jump ahead of the front group and also attack out of the constantly reducing main peloton containing the GC favourites, however no moves were able to stick.
As the race started the final first category climb up to the summit finish, Power and the other breakaway riders held just a slim 30seconds advantage and shortly after they were swallowed up by the fast chasing select front group which included Yates.
Peio Bilbao (Astana) opened up a solo lead and behind Yates tried an attack with seven kilometres to go but it was quickly shut down by Team Sky.
Yates began to drop off the reduced chase group after his effort, but fought back on to take time over his rivals and move up the GC. After six days Daryl Impey also retains the green points jersey.
"It was a solid day, the plan was for Carlos and myself to try and get in large breakaway and it worked out perfectly when both of us got in the large group that went up the road early.
"I felt good today, it was up or down all day which made for a really hard day. The team has been going well all week and it’s exciting going into tomorrow's stage with Yates now in second overall."
