Yates moves into third overall with eighth on stage four

Tue 9 May 2017

British climber Adam Yates has finished in eighth place, amongst the main overall contenders, on the first mountain stage of the Giro d’Italia today.

The volcanic peak of Etna provided the backdrop for the first hit out amongst the climbers on stage four, but it was breakaway survivor Jan Polanc (UAE Team Emirates) who soloed to victory.

Behind, it was as a relatively large 22-rider group who approached the line together 29seconds adrift.

“The conditions, with a head wind on the final climb, made the race a bit more negative than many had thought or wished for and as a result we didn’t see any of the fireworks that were anticipated,” sport director Matt White said.

“For us, Adam’s performance showed he is up there with the main contenders, but after the first mountain stage we haven’t seen really any weaknesses from any of the major contenders.

Carlos (Verona) also did a good job of looking after Adam and as his main support this Giro we will look for him to continue that role in the coming weeks.”

How it happened:

The fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia promised a lot with the Tour's first mountain stage finishing up Etna.

Four riders formed the day's breakaway, but Quickstep Floors kept their advantage at a manageable six-minutes throughout the day.

By the time they reached the final climb, the breakaway had reduced to two riders and their advantage was under five-minutes.

Polanc (UAE Team Emirates) went solo on the lower ramps of the final climb and it was left to the domestiques of the overall contenders to take up the chase.

As they approached the final five kilometers, Polanc held onto a two-minute advantage to the peloton and he managed to hold on to take a solo victory.

Behind Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha Alpecin) made a late attack to finish 10seconds ahead of the major contender’s group, which contained Yates.
