Sport Director Martin Barras led the ORICA-AIS squad into the EnergieWacht Tour with vocal ambitions – “Whatever we do or try will be done with the purpose of winning.”
Although the team didn’t score a win, the team’s unrelenting efforts over the five day, six stage tour helped procure two stage podiums and placed Loes Gunnewijk second on the overall general classification (GC).
Kirsten Wild (Argos-Shimano) won the opening two stages but it was Ellen Van Dijk (Speciaized-lululemon) who won the overall after winning the TT with a significant gap over the other tour contenders. Gunnewijk sat in third position after the TT, but the team wasn’t content. The aggressive style of racing that the ORICA-AIS women are known for ultimately helped Gunnewijk move onto the second step of the final overall GC podium.
“All in all, we had a great week in northern Holland (well, if you like near zero temperature, that is!) and are now looking at six days of recovery, and then the Ronde van Gelderland next weekend.” – Martin Barras
