Giro d'Italia
Stage 14: Castellania to Oropa - Stage Details

British star Adam Yates has climbed his way to sixth position on the mountain-top finish on stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia

The 22-year-old took his most aggressive approach so far in the Italian Grand Tour by attacking on the final 11.8km climb, but the ORICA-SCOTT rider was not given any space by Nairo Quintana (Movistar) who subsequently counter attacked.

Yates fought strongly to stay with an elite group of five chasers before losing touch in the final two-kilometres, eventually finishing 41seconds down on Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) who claimed the stage to extend his overall lead.

The performance was enough to move the Tour de France best young rider up two positions in the general classification to sit in 13th position, 7’43” behind Dumoulin and 2’07” outside the top ten.

“I was up there with the best guys in the world until about two-kilometres to go,” Yates said. “I needed to hang on a couple of hundred most metres before the flat and downhill but I just fell short.”
