Giro d'Italia
Stage 2: Olbia to Tortoli - Stage Details

After a positive build up, surviving a day predicted to be too difficult, Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan suffered trouble in the final sprint, losing his pedal after a knock to take him out of contention on stage two of the Giro d’Italia

As the 22-year-old hit out, he knocked Quickstep rider Fernando Gaviria next to him and lost his foot out of the pedal and his momentum as Andrei Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) went on to take the victory and overall lead.

“To be honest I can’t exactly remember what happened,” Ewan said of the finale. “When I bumped into (Gaviria) my foot came out of the pedal and obviously at that point in the race it’s going to be pretty hard to get your foot back in and continue sprinting.”
