ORICA-SCOTT women kicked off the 2017 Giro Rosa strongly with a third place finish in today’s opening team time trial stage in Aquileia.
As one of the final team’s to start, ORICA-SCOTT set a high bench mark crossing the line with a time of 15minutes and nine seconds to move into the hot seat with just five team’s left to finish.
The Australian outfit remained in the top spot until the final moments as the penultimate team to finish, Team Sunweb, stopped the clock three seconds faster, followed by the eventual winners Boels-Dolmans, who clocked an impressive time of 14minutes and 47seconds, the only team to dip under 15minutes to steal the victory.
Sport director Gene Bates was satisfied with the result and happy with the timing’s looking forward to the nine important stages ahead.
“I predicted we would finish third, most of the girls said it would be great to get third but expected to be around fourth or fifth so I think it was probably a little bit better than we expected considering it hasn’t really been a huge focus event for us,” Bates explained.
